Here’s the strange part. The engineers designing these systems often recognize the ethical problems. They send their kids to schools that ban smartphones or are low-tech. They use apps that limit their own screen time. They’ve read the research on social media and teenage depression. Yet they continue building products that maximize engagement above all other considerations.

This isn’t necessarily hypocrisy. It’s a coordination problem baked into capitalist innovation. Individual actors make rational decisions within a competitive system, and those decisions aggregate into outcomes nobody wanted. No single designer set out to create a mental health crisis among teenagers. But when your performance review depends on engagement metrics, and your competitor is willing to make their product more addictive, you face a choice between your ethics and your career.

On one side, you have ordinary people with ordinary self control, trying to navigate their daily lives. On the other side, you have teams of engineers with PhDs in behavioral psychology, running thousands of A/B tests to find the exact shade of red that makes you most likely to click. The contest is absurdly one sided.

It’s like blaming someone for getting hooked on cigarettes after tobacco companies spent decades engineering them for maximum addictiveness. Sure, people made a choice to smoke that first cigarette. But that choice happened in an environment deliberately constructed to make it nearly impossible to stop.

The law recognizes this dynamic with children. We don’t let companies market certain products to kids because we acknowledge that children lack the cognitive tools to resist sophisticated manipulation. But the uncomfortable truth is that adults aren’t much better equipped when facing the full arsenal of modern behavioral design. We’d like to think we’re rational actors making informed choices. The data suggests otherwise.

The Innovation Justification

Tech companies defend their practices with a familiar argument. Innovation requires experimentation. If we limit what products can do, we’ll stifle creativity and progress. Besides, these tools provide real value. Social media connects people across distances. Smartphones put the world’s information in your pocket. Gaming brings joy to millions.

All true. But it dodges the core question. The issue isn’t whether these products provide value. They obviously do. The issue is whether the value justifies the harm, and whether the harm is necessary to deliver the value.

Consider an alternative history. What if social media platforms had prioritized user wellbeing over engagement from the start? They might have grown more slowly. They might have made less money. But would they have failed to find an audience? Probably not. People genuinely want to connect with friends and family. They just don’t need algorithmic feeds optimized to provoke outrage, or features designed to create FOMO, or notification patterns engineered to interrupt their attention as frequently as possible.

The defense of innovation often conflates two different things. There’s innovation that solves problems and creates value. Then there’s innovation in extracting value from users, often at their expense. Not all innovation is created equal.

Where Medicine Draws Lines We Ignore

The pharmaceutical industry offers an interesting comparison. We heavily regulate drugs because we recognize their potential for harm. Companies must prove both efficacy and safety before marketing a product. They face liability for side effects they fail to disclose. They cannot market opioids to recovering addicts, even if those addicts would choose to buy them.

These regulations exist because we decided, collectively, that unfettered markets in products that alter human neurochemistry lead to bad outcomes. Personal responsibility arguments didn’t override that collective decision. We didn’t say people should simply choose not to abuse OxyContin. We recognized that when products interact with human psychology in powerful ways, laissez faire approaches fail.

Over time, this changes the information environment we all inhabit. It becomes harder to find calm, thoughtful discussion of complex issues. It becomes easier to find content designed to provoke immediate emotional reactions. And because we’re social creatures who absorb the norms of our environment, we adapt. We become more reactive, more tribal, more certain.

The Counterintuitive Case for Friction

Modern product design treats friction as the enemy. Every unnecessary click removed, every barrier to engagement eliminated. The goal is seamless, frictionless experiences that let users do what they want with minimum resistance.

But friction isn’t always bad. Sometimes friction serves important purposes. The pause between slot machine pulls gave gamblers a moment to reconsider. The extreme paternalist answer is everything. Protect people from themselves at all costs.

The truth probably lives somewhere between these poles. We should respect human autonomy while acknowledging that autonomy has limits. We should celebrate innovation while recognizing that not all innovation serves human interests. We should trust people to make their own choices while admitting that choices happen in contexts that can be more or less fair.

This middle path requires judgment calls. How addictive is too addictive? When does persuasion become manipulation? Where’s the line between giving people what they want and exploiting their weaknesses?

These questions don’t have algorithmic answers. They require ongoing conversation, evolving norms, and probably some amount of trial and error. What we can’t do is pretend the questions don’t exist, or that markets will automatically solve them.

Building Products for Humans, Not Users

Here’s what’s at stake. We’re in the middle of a massive experiment in human behavior modification. We’re learning to hijack attention and manipulate behavior at scales previously unimaginable. And we’re doing it with minimal oversight, driven primarily by whoever can extract the most value from human psychology.

That experiment will shape what kind of society we become. Not just whether people waste time on their phones, but how we form relationships, process information, and decide what matters. The products we build now are building us in return.

The question isn’t whether your product can be too addictive. Obviously it can. The question is whether we’re willing to sacrifice short term engagement and profit to avoid finding out just how addictive we can make things. Because that experiment has no happy ending.

Just better and better mousetraps, and mice who’ve forgotten they’re trapped.
